BEFORE Even at 2,600 square feet (including

the finished basement), the existing house felt

cramped because of dark rooms and dead-end

spaces, says Nanette, who resisted her initial

urge to add on. “The best advice anyone gave

me was to not do anything right away.”

AFTER Even though it occupies the same

footprint as before, the living room looks and

feels larger thanks to new windows around the

fireplace. Cream-color walls and earth-tone

upholstery create a neutral background, while

teal and sunny yellow accents add energy.
